The South Korea Adoption program holds the status of the oldest organized international adoption program that operates in the United States of America. The records say that 1,630 South Korea children were adopted by the US citizens in 2005. The children available for Korea adoption include children from both sexes. The ages of the children available for adoption start from 6 months. The children live in surrogate care and group homes.
The Korea adoption program has a long history dating back to the early 1950s. During the Korean War (1950 – 1953) lots of US soldiers had come to the land of South Korea. Many of these US servicemen had relations with the South Korean women. That relation led to the birth of children. But these children were not recognized as legitimate ones by the society. The traditional patriarchal Korean society did not accept these children. The children henceforth had a very bleak future. These mixed race children were known as Amerasian children. The plight of these abused and scorned children appealed to Henry and Bertha Holt who founded the Holt International. This organization started the international adoption program in South Korea. Initially, they started with the adoption of eight Amerasian children.
The Korea adoption program is applicable for all the countries. Established families from all countries can appeal to adopt children under the Korea adoption program. But the most of adoption happens from the developed countries. It has been estimated that an excess of 1,50,000 children have been adopted from Korea to the developed countries like Australia, Canada, USA and a large part of Europe.
