The
National Assembly of South Korea is the
Parliament of the country. With 299 members, the
South Korean Parliament is an
Unicameral Legislature. The
Parliament of South Korea includes single member Constituencies which comprises of 243 of the
National Assembly's seats and the 56 remaining seats are granted by process of proportional representation. The members of the South Korean
Parliament serve a tenure of four years.
According to the
Constitution of South Korea the
Unicameral Parliament of the country consists of at the least 200 members. Following the laws strictly, the candidates aspiring for a seat in the South Korean
Parliament should be at least thirty years of age and should be a resident of the country for at least five years. However, the latter clause was dropped and a political compromise was made in order to allow
Kim Dae Jung to assume the office. There are a number of
Political parties in South Korea who are an integral part of the
South Korean Parliament, these include:
- Democratic Labor Party
- Millennium Democratic Party
- Uri Party
- Grand National Party
- United Liberal Democrats
There ahas been several alterations in the format, power and structure of the
Parliament of South Korea with the change in the nature of the ruling regime. But presently, under the rule of
Kim Dae Jung, South Korean Parliament is completely a democratic one and has no authoritarian trend in it. Unlike the Fourth Republic and Fifth Republic which were authoritarian in nature, in the Present Sixth Republic the
South Korea Parliament cannot be dissolved by the President.
