Elections are an important part of their Governmental procedure.
Elections in South Korea take place at a National level to select the members of the
National Assembly and the
President. The
Constitution of South Korea declares the Nation to be a
Democratic Republic and claims freedom and democratic rights to be the guiding forces of the Government. With a political frame work of
Presidential Representative Democratic Republic in a
multi party system, it is only obvious that elections would be an important political device.
Elections in South Korea are held at different levels. At the
National level Elections are held to choose very important posts of the
Government bodies. Of all the 299 members of the
National Assembly of Korea, 243 in single seat
Constituencies while 46 other members are elected by proportional representation. The importance of
Elections in South Korea are elevated by the fact that it is a multi party system, the important
Political Parties of South Korea include:
- United Liberal Democrats
- Grand National Party
- Democratic Labor Party
- Millennium Democratic Party
- Uri Party
By- election were also organized in
South Korea and they were an important barometer of the opinion of the public about the
Roh administration and the
Uri party which was just a couple of years old. With the initiation of such democratic instruments, South Korea has become an integral part of
World Democracies.
