During the past centuries many people of different Asian origins have migrated to the peninsula of Korea (both South and North Korea). But there were very few permanent residents so
Korea population was regarded as an ethnic homogeneous group in the whole world. The Chinese, Japanese, Westerners comprise a small portion of the
Korean population (specially in South Korea ).
The population trends of South Korea has been increasing rapidly since the establishment of republic in 1948. In 1949 census, which was the first official census the
Korea population was calculated to be 20,188,64. According to the census of 1985 the population was 40, 466, 577 people. From 1949 to 1955 the
Korea population growth rate was quite slow, it was averaging 1.1%. During that period the population was calculated to be 21.5 million. During the period of 1955 to 1966, the population growth accelerated to 29.2 million.
During the late 1980s,
the Ministry of Home Affairs, Health and Social Affairs, public and private agencies played a significant role. These agencies organized classes for the women to teach family planning methods. They gave information and distributed birth controlling devices. Special privileges and subsidies were also granted by them like granting housing loans for the parents who agree for sterilization. In the year 1984 about 502,000 population was sterilized. In 2006, 406,000 people were sterilized. In the year 1973, the Maternal and Child Health Law made abortion legal.

Korea population comprises of 49, 044, 790. The age structure of this calculated population are as follows:
- 0- 14 years – Female-4,262,873 Male- 4,714,103
- 15- 64 years- Female- 17,346,594 Male- 18,004,719
- 65 years and above- Female- 2,794,698 Male- 1,921,803
