Korea Clothing



The history of Korean Clothing dates back to the period of Three Kingdoms. The three kingdoms were Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje (57 B.C.- 668 A.D.). Korean clothing is very much evident from the wall paintings on the tombs that were built during this period. One of the visible aspects of Korean culture is represented by the Korean hanbok.

Korea Clothing is defined by wide varieties of materials were used to make the accessories and clothes. Different kinds of specialized fabrics are found in different parts of the country. The famous white ramie produced in South Ch'ungch'ong and Hasan Province was once sent for tribute to the court of Tang Chinese in the Koryo Period ( 918- 1392 ).

For making clothes, ramie, silk, satin, cotton muslin, hemp were commonly used as fabrics due to the varied climactic conditions. White color is the most common color. The upper class people prefer to yellow, red, blue, black and white colored clothes. These five colors symbolize the five traditional elements like fire, metal, water, wood and earth. Bark or Flowers were commonly used as dyes.

The clothes for children are specially designed to keep the children warm. The ceremonial clothes for girls are known as dangui. The first birthday clothes are referred to as dol. Some of the other clothes for children are 'sagusam',' benet jeogori', 'saekdong jeogori', ' bokkeon', 'teol baeja'' tosu and embroidered socks.

The top portion of Korean clothes is called 'jeogori'. It looks like a blouse. For men the sleeves are longer which stretches to the waist. While women in Korea wear skirts (chima) and baggy pants (paji) are generally worn by men in Korea. Korea Clothing also includes hair pins, headdresses, foot gear, jewelry in order to make the outfit complete.
