Galapagos is a group of islands in the north western part of South America. These islands are a part of the South America country Ecuador. The islands of Galapagos are a part of the national park of Ecuador. Galapagos islands are mainly volcanic islands as they are situated on a hot spot of the earth's crust where the earth is melting from below. The Galapagos islands consist of thirteen main islands, six small islands, more than hundreds of rocks and many islets.
Galapagos is notable for the amazing variety of species of life that it produces. These islands are a part of conservation and scientific researches as well. Charles Darwin research Station is there in the Galapagos island where the scientists look after the matter of conservation. At present these islands are a part of the Marine reserve, whale sanctuary and Biosphere reserve also. UNESCO has already declared the Galapagos islands a World Heritage. Among the various species that are among the Galapagos island lives, there are, Galapagos, land Iguana, Marine iguana, Galapagos tortoise and many more.
Galapagos island which can boast of the variety of species that it has in several of its islands, is facing a threat. There are a number of animal and plant species that are brought here artificially and they are posing great threat for the native species here. The foreign animals that include cats and dogs also are killing the timid and defenseless native species and that is great problem here. Even the marine life is endangered by indiscriminate fishing.
