The government of Panama considers that the current lock system should be expanded to give passage to the modern tankers and the huge cargo vessels and will restrict the time loss faced by the ships while crossing it due to traffic congestion in the canal. Government desires to build two locks complexes, on the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean and expand the existing canals. It will increase the passage of ships with even 12,000 containers. According to the government officials the costs might rises up to $5.2 billion and it is destined to commence on 2007 and hopefully end by 2014. It is decided to be financed from the increased tolls and through foreign credit.
Panama has been in news because of the strained relation between Cuna population in Panama and the spread of tourism. Cuna attracts attention on account of its rain forests, the coral islands and the splendid Cuna tradition. But the Cuna tribes are against tourists’ invention into their territory. Cuna Indians were not in the favor of tourist visits as well as set up of tourist lodges in Cuna until the recent past. Things are beginning to change now.
