According to a report the Honduran Committee for the Defense of Human Rights reported the killings of nearly 1000 poor children who live in the streets by the death squads assisted by the Honduran police attracted the attention of the UN and the whole world.
The free trade agreement in 2003
In 2003 Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua entered into a free trade agreement with the US. This deal came into effect on April 2006 and was approved by the Honduran Congress in 2005
New Honduran president sworn in recently in Honduras
Recently Mr. Manuel Zelaya of the center-right Liberal Party defeated Mr. Lobo belonging to the National Party, to become the President of Honduras. He was previously a civil engineer. Mr. Zelaya in his speech has expressed his concern for the poverty and the terrible fights between the local gangs. He has asked the international community to extend cooperation in the implementation of the program and projects to help the poor and the down trodden by increasing job prospects and opportunities for income. He also in favor of globalization in Honduras and he look forward for free trade deals with US. To deal with the problem of gang wars and to eradicate robberies, riots inside prison houses and brutal killings of people, he has chosen a ex-army general to look into the matter.
