Guatemala has been in the news for its long-drawn civil war that lasted for more than 36 years. The world witnessed a bloody war in Guatemala that came to an end only in 1996. Many civilians lost their lives and property in the course of this war.
The presidential election of 2003 was also an important piece of Guatemala news. Oscar Berger who won the elections came from agricultural background. He won the support and backing of the agricultural and banking sectors.
Recently Guatemala is in news for the unearthing of many secret documents. The investigating agencies in Guatemala have searched an archive of paperwork stored by the National Police containing nearly 75 million paged documents, photographs and audio visual evidence. These documents were found when the residents of Guatemala asked the investigators from the Human Rights Ombudsman's Office to search for explosives in a police compound.
The torrential rains caused by the Tropical Storm Stan in the past year, caused havoc in a number of Guatemalan villages. According to the U N's World Food Program (WFP) estimates nearly 1.5 million people have been affected till date. The most badly affected area is occupied by the native Mayan Tzujuhil population. According to the latest news around 4800 families are residing in temporary shelters and 20,000 families are surviving on food provided by WFP.
