The Somalia history dates back to unknown times. The earliest record of Somalia is that of the Puntland region that was known for the Myrrh export to Egypt. There is however an intermission in its historical importance till the 7th century AD when Mogadishu, the present day capital of Somalia became the trading port. This was the time when the Persians and Arabs were flourishing in merchandise and chose the Somalia coast to set up their trade hub in the Gulf of Aden- Indian ocean region. The 14th century record by Ibn Batuta, a famous Traveler, speaks highly of the trade that used be conducted in Somalia. The the native Somalis joined the Muslim sultans to wage war against the Christian establishment that was growing in the region during these times.
EUROPEAN CONTROL OVER SOMALIA
When the British began trade through the Indian sea route, they chose it as the their halting station for refilling ships. Later many of the European nations that became interested in colonization took interest in Somalian coastline. Thus Somalia was divide among the British, the French and the Italians. This was during the 19th century when colonial expansion was at its heights. The British occupation of Somalia dates back to 1886 while the Italian invasion and establishment to 1889.
After Independence from the the colonial regime, the British Somaliland and the Italian Somaliland joined to form the Republic of Somalia. The French Somaliland became Djibouti.
