Škocjan Caves are the limestone caves of the Karst (Kras) region. The Škocjan Caves consist of about 5km of subsurface channels or gorges along with collapsed dolines, caves with a depth of more than 200mts. and a large number of tinkling waterfalls. The dark subterranean passages possess an unearthly atmosphere due to the various river eroded odd rock formations. One of the very best sites for observing karstic phenomena. The fearful superstitions of the Medieval Celtic imaginative traditions felt the voices of its ancestors calling out to them in the echoes of the subterranean water flow. Even today a tourist in these caves of UNESCO World Heritage Site status feel the same awe and elation at the magnificent beauty of them.
Location of Škocjan Caves
Škocjan Caves are located in the south western part of the country of Slovenia, the co-ordinates being about 450 N and 130 E.
Reaching Škocjan Caves
The wonderful natural cave structure of Škocjan can be reached by road or by rail. Ljubljana - Koper highway is the road link while by rail to reach Škocjan, the rail station of Divaca is to be used.
The tourists are allowed to travel through only about half of the total cave structure to ensure its maintenance by exposing it to only a manageable amount of human exposure. The subterranean passage measures only about 2.3kms, with the lowest point being about 144m. It may also be noted that the visit is of 90mins. duration.
