Slovakia Women

Slovakia has never been very generous to its women. Despite legal policies and agreements on the status of Slovakia women they continue to be deprived of their rights as citizens of Slovakia. In every aspect of the country, political, clerical, evangelical, social and economical, the absence of the women is a glaring feature. In the clash between politics and religion in Slovakia it is the Slovakia women who suffer and are neglected.

The rights of the Slovakia women have been curbed thus denying them equal status in the Slovak society as the men and restricting their identity to household workers and managers. Women in Slovakia therefore do not get equal opportunities as their male counterparts in terms of employment and remunerations. Statistics show that the salary of Slovak women was 74.9% of that of the men in 1996, 74.1 % in 2001 and fell to 71.7% in 2002. The difference in the salaries of Slovakia men and women was noticed especially in the banking and communication sectors. Women of Slovakia in the professional world are experiencing a consistent deterioration of their rights and status.

In the political field too the picture of the position of Slovakia women is quite bleak. Though they retain their right to vote and elect political representatives they themselves are denied from participate in any political activities or government policies. Prior to 1989 only 20% of the women in Slovakia were in the parliament. This figure fell to 12% after 1990. The activities of the Non-Governmental organizations led to the increase in the women's participation in government. But the figure could not go further than 19.3%. If the scenario is poor at the national level it is worse at the regional level.

National and state policies should ensure the safeguarding of rights of the Slovakia women in order to uplift their status and bring them to an equal level with the men.
