Slovakian

Slovakia has a rich folk culture and the society is made up of 85% of native Slovaks. Slovakian is the official language of Slovakia and is spoken all over the country by majority of the people. Apart from the 5million people who speak Slovakian, it is also spoken outside the country especially by people in United States and in Canada.

Slovakian language originates from the west Slavic branch of the Slavic languages. There are three areas in Slovakia which are divided on the basis of three Slovakian dialects. These are west, central and east. The eastern dialect resembles the Rusyn language. Slovakian is similar to the Czech language. This is because of the cultural influence under which the Slovakian developed.

The Latin alphabet is used in the Slovakian script. The alphabet is written with diacritics which are accent marks. The alphabet consists of 3 characters, vowel, consonant and diphthong. Palatalization is used in the Slovak language. There are certain grammatical rules that are embedded within the Slovakian language. Certain alphabets in Slovakian whose values are almost the same as English letters are b, d, f, h, l, k, m, n, p, x.

A number of principles apply to the Slovak spelling. These include Phonemic, Morphological and etymological. Articles are absent in Slovakian. Nouns, verbs, prepositions, conjunctions, adverbs etc are all present.

Basic Slavic word roots and sounds of Common Slavic are contained in Slovakian. It emerged as a national language in the late 18th and 19th centuries when the Slovak people became increasingly aware of their national identity. This was accompanied by the rise of education and literacy in Slovakia.
