Slovakia Music is an important part of the rich cultural heritage of the country. The traditional forms of music in Slovakia have survived through the ages and are popular still today. The variety of Slovakia music comes from the different influences that have affected the style and compositions of the artists.
The traditional folk music of Slovakia is one of the best examples of folk music in the world. The liturgical compositions of the past are a part of the tradition. The songs of the Csallokoz and Zobor regions, the tunes composed by shepherds and ballads composed by the people of the Gomor region, the collection of folk songs from Nyitra and the area around Upper Garam constitute a major part of the folk music of Slovakia. The rhythm, tunes, composition of these songs are influenced by legends of the past. The musical tradition of folk music of Slovakia has been handed down from one generation to the succeeding generations. The czardas was a form of Slovakia music that was essentially composed for the purpose of dancing to its tunes.
The change in the popular trend of music of Slovakia came with the American influence over the country. The invasion of rock and roll, jazz, pop, etc pushed folk music to a backseat in the rate of popularity. These forms encouraged the formation of bands and groups like Blue Grass, Lunetic and Elektra. The classical genre of Slovakia Music was retained by the operas like Slovak National Theater Bratislava and State Opera Banska Bystrica.
Recent times have seen the regaining of popularity of Slovakia folk music. The state aided institution, Music Center Slovakia, has taken up the responsibility of organizing concerts and events to popularize Slovakia Music in the country as well as abroad.
