Las Lenas in the Mendoza Province of Argentina is probably the biggest ski resort in South America in every sense of the word.
The high altitude and heavy snowfall of Las Lenas opens up a ski area that is one of the largest in the world. There are 29 pistes that cover a total ski area of 568 acres. However, most of the trails of this extremely steep mountain resort are strictly for experts. The famous Marte chairlift opens up some of the most extreme and challenging ski trails. The beginners are also catered for in some of the 40 runs in the resort, but Las Lenas is an expert specialty. Most of the trails are extremely challenging, and there are great opportunities for off-piste and backcountry skiing.
However, a problem with the Las Lenas ski resort is the extreme snow and avalanche that hit the resort at times, making it completely impossible to ski for weeks together. Specially, the famous Marte chairlift, which takes skiers up the higher and some of the most challenging terrains, can be closed for weeks together following heavy snowstorms. It is impossible to ski Las Lenas when it snows, it becomes simply too dangerous.
The nightlife of Las Lenas ski resort is simply amazing. The resort is 450 km. from the capital city of the province of Mendoza . Malargue airport is the nearest airport, from where the resort can be reached via road.
