Tanjong Pagar is a district located within the Central Business District with a historical significance. For many years Chinese and Indians migrated to Singapore to this dock like structures.
The highlighting areas of
Tanjong Pagar are:
- Tanjong Pagar Plaza: Earlier there were war shop houses here and called Cheng Cheok Street. Once it had been an important crossroads for traffic between warehouses along The Singapore River and the Wharves. Presently it comprises of flats, shop houses, market and food center.
- Tanjong Pagar railway Station: The Malaysian Railway Company had its terminal railway station here in Singapore. Now the only
- stop in Singapore is Woodlands and Tanjong Pagar railway Station.
- Maxwell Food Center: It had its existence since the pre war days. Now it is the hawkers center along with Cantonese food stalls on the famous China Street.
- Cantonment Road: The Indian Sepoys who stationed here in 1819 gave this name with relevance to the purpose as military
- accommodation. Locally it is also called Ba Suo Wei.
- Duxton Hill: In its early days it was the plantation land for Nutmeg. Later these lands were sold to wealthy Chinese who have build shop houses and transformed it to business complex.
- Teylok Ayer Performing Arts Center: This House located at Cecil Street shows many cultural traditions and art disciplines, affiliated with the National Arts Council since 1985.
Once a Malay floating Fishing Village,
Tanjong Pagar is now a district with rich historical architecture fusing modern skyscrapers rows of pubs ,bars and karaoke lounges in exquisitely conserved pre World War II shop houses.
