Serbia and Croatia

Serbia Croatia provides with important information about the kind of relation that existed between this two Balkan countries in the past. The relation between Serbia and Croatia can be traced back to the time when the Kingdom of Serbs, Slovenes and Coats were formed during the First World War. This Kingdom was later named as the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. However, all the countries withdrew from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia one after another and finally led to the disintegration of the Kingdom.

Historical Relation between Serbia and Croatia

As far as Croatia was concerned, it declared itself to be an independent state on 25th of June, 1992, and withdrew from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. This was followed by tensions between the federal groups and the "republic defense forces", which gradually escalated into a full fledged war. During this time, the Croatian population consisted of a considerable number of Serbs. This Serbs fought on the part of the federal forces in Croatia. A major part of the Republic of Croatia was occupied by the Serb Guerillas.

Role of United Nation in Serbia Croatia War

After a lot of bloodshed and agony in the country, the United Nation called for peace in Croatia. For almost three years, UN maintained 14000 peacekeepers in Croatia in order to ensure peace between the rebel Serbs and the nationalist defense forces. The Serbs declared the Republic of Krajina that consisted of the territories that were captured by them in the war of 1991. The neighboring areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina were gradually pulled in the war and Croatia started to fear that the Bosnian Serbs would further empower the Republic of Krajina. In May 1955, the army led by Croatia, swept across Republic of Krajina and destroyed it. The Serbs responded to this by sending a missile to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. The Croatian Army captured most of the part of the Serb land. More than 100000 Serbs fled from their own land.

This was finally ended on 14th of December, 1995, with the signing of the Dayton Peace Accord between Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia.

Presently, Serbia Croatia relation is marked with great degree of cooperation as both the countries are taking important steps to peacefully solve the problems between them.
