Bosnia and Serbia

The relation between Bosnia and Serbia forms an important part of Serbia History.

Bosnia lodged a Case against Serbia

Serbia was the very first country to face trial in the International Court of Justice because Serbia was found guilty of carrying out genocidal attacks in Bosnia and conducting mass killing. Bosnia and Herzegovina had filed a complaint with the international Court of Justice that the Kingdom of Serbia and Montenegro had well planned and conducted the major genocide in Bosnia.

Reason behind lodging the case

In July 1995, the Bosnian Serbs carried out the mass scale slaughter of 8000 men and boys in Bosnia. This violence on the part of the Bosnian Serbs, led to the prosecution of Serbia in the court.

Verdict of the International Court of Justice

The Court finally delivered its verdict on the 26th of February, 2007. In the verdict the court said that it considered that even though Serbia was not directly responsible for the genocidal act, but being a party to the United Nations Convention on Genocide, it should have taken measures to prevent such violence or should have at least punished the Bosnian Serbs. This verdict seemed to settle the matters between Serbia and Bosnia.

Improved Diplomatic Ties between Serbia and Bosnia

However, in spite of the above mentioned problem, both Bosnia and Serbia are trying to develop mutually beneficial diplomatic relation. Bosnia and Serbia entered into an agreement on 4th of October, 1996 that they will develop strong and healthy diplomatic relation between themselves. The agreement was signed by the President of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic and the chairman of Bosnia Presidency, Alija Izetbegovic.

Thus, the relationship between Serbia and Bosnia are improving.
