Scotland yard is the central office of Scotland's Police Service. It is popularly known as New Scotland Yard from 1890. The Yard of Scotland sprawls over an area of a 20-story block along Broadway and Victoria Street in Westminster, which is 450 meters from the Parliament House of Scotland. This detective branch has become worldwide famous with its policing activities everywhere in Scotland.
History of Scotland Yard:
Scotland Yard was founded on 29th September 1829 by Sir Robert Peel with the assistance of Francois-Eugene Vidocq. The name Scotland Yard is obtained from its original situation of the street of Whitehall. This street of Scotland's Police Service got its architectural design from two famous architects namely Inigo Jones and Christopher Wren. The main entrance of this building is near the gate number four of Whitehall and the staffs over there takes care of the internal security, public affairs, recruitment, correspondence and other administrative matters. While in 1890 the building was shifted along the Victoria Embankment just south of the Defence Ministry office. By 1940 the cops department of Scotland expanded to a great extent with its modern technology. Later in 1967, New Scotland Yard shifted to its present location. Previously the original Scotland Yard belong to the British Army and in 2004 it became a library of the Defence Ministry.
