Map of Eilean Siar Council

The only local council in the country of Scotland with a Gaelic name is Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Council. It is a local government council for the Scotland council area of Na h-Eileanan Siar.

The Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Council was established in the year 1975. It was formed after a gap of 57 years since the time Na h-Eileanan a lar was created with the provision to elect a representative to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom’s Parliament.

The General elections are held after every five years and the upcoming elections to the council will be held in the year 2017. Since the year 1975, the elections were conducted through the ‘first-past-the-post’ (FPTP) method of election. In this procedure during the final elections, 31 single-member wards elect 31 councilors.

In 2007, through the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, a single transferable vote procedure along with the multi-member wards surfaced. It was used for the first time in the selection of three to four councilors from each ward. It was basically a system created for proportional representation.
