The preservation of the archeological heritage of Saudi Arabia is an important issue of the Saudi Arabian government. The archeological heritage of Saudi Arabia is protected and preserved for the forthcoming generations as an important specimen of Saudi Arabian culture and tradition.
The archeological heritage of Saudi Arabia is currently protected by the Department of Museums and Antiquities, which has undertaken the task of excavating, classifying and maintaining the pre-historic and historical sites of the country. The Department of Archaeology at King Saud University in Riyadh is also an important institution, which preserves the Archeological Heritage of Saudi Arabia.
The most important restoration work that was undertaken recently was at Dariyah, the ancestral home of Al-Saud family and first capital of Saudi Arabia. The other significant projects include the ones at Tayma, Al-Ula, Saleh, Duma, Fau, Madain Saleh, pilgrimage road to Mecca and along Darb Zuhaydah.
Since Saudi Arabia is mainly an Islamic nation, special care is taken to preserve the Islamic archeological heritage of Saudi Arabia. As a result, the Prophet Muhammad’s Mosque at Medina, and Holy Mosque in Mecca, as well as other mosques around the Saudi Arabian country are carefully maintained. The work of restoration has also been started at Jeddah, other Saudi cities, Hail and old Qasr Al-Hokm area in Riyadh.
