Traditional Sports in Saudi Arabia

The Traditional sports in Saudi Arabia that were primarily played in the early ages, are still very much popular in the country. There are still many sports enthusiasts in the country who show a great interest in the traditional sports of the country. The most popular traditional sports are camel racing, falconry and horse racing.

Camel racing is a very popular form of sport among the Bedouin tribes of Saudi Arabia. These races are organized on a tract of 10 to 14 km and the tracks are oval-shaped. Thousands of camel owners participate in these competitions, often accompanied by riders in four-wheeler trucks and cars who race along with the camels. The competition is very intense and huge cash awards are given to the winner. Every year, during winters, traditional camel races are still organized at the King Fahd International Stadium.

Falconry is another popular traditional sport in Saudi Arabia, which has a long history. Traditionally, saluki dogs and falcons were hunted together to supplement the diet of the desert people. The training of a falcon for hunting is a laborious and complex process and for some young Saudi Arabian youths, the training and hunting of falcons is still an exciting and important sport activity.

Horse racing is another renowned and popular traditional sport of Saudi Arabia. In the modern days, both endurance racing and show jumping races of horses are conducted at the stadium in Riyadh.
