Modern sports in Saudi Arabia are gaining huge popularity with the younger crowd of the Saudi Arabian population. Although the Saudi Arabian people had a great affinity towards horse racing, camel racing and falconry since the past many decades, they are now showing deeper interest towards the modern sports in Saudi Arabia.
The most popular modern sport of Saudi Arabia is soccer, along with gymnastics, handball, cycling, archery, table tennis, swimming, volleyball and basketball gaining wider acceptance among people. Saudi Arabian youth are encouraged towards learning and pursuing the modern sports. For this reason, hundreds of stadium and sports clubs have been built and physical education lessons are imparted to all Arabian youth.
The introduction of the First Development Plan was the first step taken towards the development of modern sports in Saudi Arabia. This plan aimed at the construction of sports and athletic facilities for the Arabian youth and the development of a nationwide network of sports facilities. Another important step taken towards the growth of modern sports in Saudi Arabia is the establishment of General Presidency of Youth Welfare, which aims at involving more people in sports activities.
Saudi Arabia has taken an active participation in the national and international sports events and especially in soccer. Saudi Arabian sportsmen and athletes would soon emerge as one of the leading nations in modern sport activities.
