King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals is located in a region, which incidentally is the first place where petroleum was discovered for the first time in Dammam. Many oil-producing wells were present in the land where the university stands today. The University is at a location between the Dahran Air base and the Saudi Arabian Oil Company’s head quarters.
The university was first established officially on 23rd September 1963 by the Royal Decree. The first batch of students however joined the university a year later in 1964. At that time the university was known as the College of Petroleum and Minerals. There were 67 students who enrolled in the first batch. Now that number has increased to more than 10000 students. The first batch of students graduated from the university in 1971. The academic status and name change occurred in 1975 when the College of Petroleum and Minerals started to be known as University of Petroleum and Minerals. The university got its current name – King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, in the year 1986.
King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals has five colleges. All the colleges offer both graduate and under graduate courses in Environmental Design, Computer Sciences and Engineering, Sciences, Industrial Management and Engineering Sciences. The university offers a score of advanced studies, research and training options to the students to excel in the field of leadership, technical skill and management of the country’s vast petroleum and mineral industries.
