Republic of San Marino's history can be traced back to AD 301. The events leading to the unification of Italy saw the tiny European state opting to stay out of the process.
The unification of Italy saw the aggregation of independent Italian provinces to form the country of Italy. The process of Italian unification gained momentum after the Roman Republic failed in 1849. The Republic of San Marino gave political refuge to many supporters of the unification of Italy prior to its formation. San Marino gave political asylum to Giuseppe Garibaldi, one of the major leaders in the movement of the unification of Italy, and his supporters. The independent streak of San Marino was recognized by all major powers of Europe at that time. The recognition of the independence of the Republic of San Marino was signed in 1862.
