The Feudal Era in San Marino saw repeated conquests of the republic. The San Marino feudal era was characterized by regional Italian warlords laying claim to the tiny European country.
The Feudal Era in San Marino was scarred by battles conducted by the Lords of neighboring Italian regions like Rimini, Montefeltro and Urbino. The battles were fought for trying to wrest control of the microstate. The invasions were done in a successive manner. All of the attempts to conquer the country failed. This was made possible by strategic thinking on the part of the rulers of feudal San Marino. The administrators of San Marino signed military agreements with a number of smaller regional Lords to prevent any conquest of the state by a stronger and bigger regional military power.
The Republic of San Marino was occupied by foreigners a few times in its history. The Italian Duke Cesare Borgia invaded the state in 1503. San Marino remained in his grasp until his death. The early 18th century saw the rebel Catholic Cardinal Guilio Alberoni taking control of the country for a short period of time. San Marino officially accepted the Constitution in writing in 1600. The Constitution of San Marino has largely remained unchanged until today.
