San Marino History

San Marino history started with the arrival of the Christian stonecutter Marinus. It was believed that he came to this region of the Apennines Mountains in order to flee from religious persecution. San Marino was declared a republic on 3rd September, 301 AD.

San Marino history is influenced by the country's relative isolation from the rest of Europe. The sheer heights of the Apennines have ensured the relative peace that was the unique aspect of the history of San Marino. The lack of natural resources available in the region also added to the relative peace of the small European country. San Marino became a commune in the 11th century. The dawn of the 13th century saw the Vatican recognizing the autonomy of the San Marino state. The independent status of the country was recognized by Napoleon in the later period of the 18th century.

The rulers of the Republic of San Marino have exhibited remarkable foresight during the country's long run through human history. The European state has publicly supported Italy during its giant neighbor's participation in the Second World War. San Marino changed its stance to neutrality at the turn of the war. The Republic of San Marino permitted Allied troops to enter the country to flush out the Axis soldiers’ resident there. The Republic of San Marino is presently a full member of the United Nations.
