Western Samoa

Western Samoa is the western half of the Samoan islands in the South pacific. Its official name is Independent State of Samoa. Before 20th century the entire island group used to be known as Navigators islands because of the seafaring skills of the Samoans'. Around 3500 years ago people came to settle here from Fiji and Tonga.

Western Samoa along with the American Samoa were discovered by Jacon Roggeveen. Both of these places share the same culture. The capital of this island is Apia. Here you can find a mixed population of the Samoan and the Europeans. It is the main center of economy and politics. The governmental functions take place here. Many of the villagers also flee to this place in search of a better economic engagement.

In 18th century Western Samoa came in contact with the Europeans. English missionaries and traders began to come here in 1830s. They had many clash with French, German, British and American forces. All of them claimed power in this area. The island has also witnessed civil war. At present it has got a parliamentary democracy.

West Samoa is famous for its rugged forest mountains, steep gorges, white sand beaches, lovely waterfalls, lava fields, dormant volcanoes and blowholes. The coconut plantation of this island is also worth mentioning. The culture of this place is not much westernized. The villages are the perfect example of some exotic place. The houses are made of coconut leaves with no concrete walls. The vibrant population of Samoa West live in traditional way.
