Siva Samoa is a popular dance form of this South Pacific island nations. Samoa has a very cultural traditions. In Samoa culture along with various musics, cuisines, dresses and other cultural forms, dance also occupies a great place. There are several dance forms in Samoa culture that are very traditional. Some of these, including Siva, are, Sasa, Taualunga, some variations of Siva and some others.
Siva dance form, which a very popular part of the Samoa culture, is a group dance. In this dance form, like some other dances in Samoa, some story is told through the gentle and delicate movements of the dance. This is graceful dance of Samoa and is deeply integrated into the cultural pattern of this island country. In the earlier times, Siva dance used be performed by the Samoa society head, the Matais. But now this dance is performed by others. There are some variations of Siva dance form like, Mak Samoa, Siva Afi etc.
In Samoan language, the term 'Siva' itself means dance. The stories that are enacted by the Siva dance performers, are taken basically from the themes and events related to everyday life of the Samoan people. For performing a Siva dance, the performers have to wear particular dance dresses. The special feature of this Siva dance dress is the head dress that is made out of hair of human hair and also feathers. The Samoan term to describe this special head dress during Siva dance is, Tuiga. Siva Samoa represents the untouched originality of the Samoan culture.
