The dancing style of the old days is slow, swaying and interpretive. The
Faataupati, dance form is accompanied by the war song and drums. Songs in three-four tempos are not used in ancient or modern dances. The song that are chosen for single or group dances are consisted of four-four or two-four tempos.

Music of Samoa takes a new turn with the arrival of the European missionaries who introduced church hymns. The local people used to bamboo flutes before that as their only instrument. They were always played by experts to give interludes for chants. Mostly they were played at bed times. Lali the wooden drum was very popular in the villages. They can b heard from great distance. They were used as signals for many things other than accompanying the song and dances.
