Samoa Government was established after the country achieved independence on January 1,1962 from Germany. The
government of Samoa is a Republic and consists of the three main branches the legislative, the executive and the
judiciary.
The Constitution of the Independent State of Samoa was adopted in 1960. The Constitution of Samoa is the guiding force for running the
government of Samoa. The languages used for official purposes by
Samoa Government are Samoan and English. Universal adult suffrage is used for selecting the
Legislative Assembly. The age at which one can vote is 21 years.
The Head of State, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Ministers form the
Executive Council of the
government of Samoa. The Parliament is the Legislative body of the
Samoa Government. The Magistrate's Court, the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals along with the Fa'amasino Fesoasoani Court make up the
Judiciary of Samoa Government.
