The Samoa flag consists of a large red area and a blue rectangular shape on the top left corner of the flag. The blue rectangle contains five stars, which are of varying sizes, and symbolic of the Southern Cross constellation.
The official flag of Samoa was officially introduced on the 1st of January, 1962. White and blue have always been traditional colors for Samoa, being incorporated in the flag of Malietoa Laupepa, a 19th century Samoan king.
The first quarter of the Samoa flag is blue, and the rest is red in color. In the blue quarter, there are five stars which depict the Southern Cross constellation. The stars are of varying sizes, and are all five pointed.
The blue quarter in the Samoa flag is said to represent freedom, and the red is indicative of courage. The five stars of the Southern Cross constellation are indicative of the cordial and friendly relations of Samoa with the other countries of the southern Hemisphere.
