Saint Lucia Religion



Saint Lucia Religion is an integral part of the country's culture and heritage. Christianity is the main religion of Saint Lucia. More than 85% of the people in the country are Roman Catholics. The rest are Methodist, Anglican, Baptist, Pentecostal, Salvation Army, Seventh-Adventist. There are other co-existing religions such as Hinduism and Islam. The minority faiths are Rastafarianism and Baha.

The government of Saint Lucia encourages religious tolerance amongst the people. The government takes care in safeguarding the religious freedom of the natives of the country. There are no cases of forced conversion and religious imprisonment taking place in this island. There is a good symbiotic relationship between a wide array of existing religious communities.

Catholicism in Saint Lucia came into being from the year 1948. Catholic missionaries started spreading Christianity throughout Saint Lucia. Within the year1951 to 1953 most of the natives of Saint Lucia converted themselves into Christians. The Roman Catholic Church in Saint Lucia is under the control of the Pope in Rome. This church attends to 23 parishes throughout the island of Saint Lucia. It also controls 3 secondary schools namely St. Joseph's Convent, St Mary's College for boys and a school for girls.
