The politics of Saint Lucia mainly centers round the political parties, which plan and formulate the political functions of Saint Lucia. The government of Saint Lucia is a democratic parliament, with bicameral legislature. The Senate and the House of Assembly are the two houses of the parliament comprising of eleven and seventeen elected members respectively. The British Queen is the head of the state but is represented by a governor general. The prime minister heads the legislature. The United Worker’s party governed the politics in Saint Lucia for a long time but from 1997, the Saint Lucia Labour party has been governing the politics. Mr. Kenny Anthony became the prime minister and there were considerable changes in the politics in Saint Lucia.
Saint Lucia Political Parties
There are two political parties, which have their strongest hold in the politics of Saint Lucia. They are the United Worker’s party and the Saint Lucia Labour party. Besides this there is the appointed party.
Like other democratic countries, the Saint Lucia political parties contest the multiparty elections and the party with the majority of votes forms the government. The head of that party becomes the prime minister and runs the government with his cabinet of ministers. The cabinet of ministers is duly appointed by the governor general on the recommendation of the prime minister. Politics in Saint Lucia follows the rules and regulations of the constitution, which was adopted in 1979.
