The Saint Lucia flag was adopted by the government of Saint Lucia on March1, 1967 and was designed by an artist named Dunstan St. Omer. The national flag of Saint Lucia is very simple but with rich symbolical background. The flag is of a rectangular shape and on it stands the three triangles overlying each other. There are four colors- cerulean blue, black, yellow and white. The rectangle is of blue color and represents the Caribbean Sea while the triangles are placed at the center of the flag. The topmost triangle is yellow in color, the second one in black and the third is white in color. The black triangle looks like a star with three points. The width of the white triangle is one and a half inch on both sides of the black triangle. However the distance between the peaks of the white and the black triangle is four inch. All the three triangles arise from the same base and the length is one third of the full flag.
Symbolical Significance of the Flag
The flag of Saint Lucia bears a rich symbolical significance. The cerulean blue stands for the sky and the sea, Caribbean and the Atlantic. The gold or yellow color stands for sunshine and prosperity. The black and white symbolizes the black and the white culture and their unity. The design symbolizes the Negro and the European culture. However the isosceles triangles represent the famous Pitons of Saint Lucia, denoting hope and aspirations of the Saint Lucians.
The government of Saint Lucia lays down that the Saint Lucia flag should be always flagged and no other flag should be flown over the Saint Lucia flag. A dilapidated flag should be replaced with a new one. In short the flag represents the culture, hope and unity of the Saint Lucians.
