Elections in Saint Lucia



Elections in Saint Lucia are held according to the rules and regulations of the constitution, adopted in 1979. Multi party elections is the form of electoral process prevalent in Saint Lucia. The elections give an overview of the government and its working process. Besides it also maintains the record of the elections held in Saint Lucia. After every five years Saint Lucia elections take place and a new government is formed. Saint Lucia functions through its democratic parliament, which is a bicameral legislature. The two houses of the legislature are the House of Assembly and the Senate. Seventeen members constitute the House of Assembly while the Senate comprises of eleven members.

Among the various political parties, The United Worker's Union and the Saint Lucia Labour party are the two parties, which have made strongest hold, by winning maximum number of votes in the elections. Then there is the party of the Appointed. Besides the elections to the legislature there is also the election of the governor general. According to the constitution of a democratic country, whole power rests with the prime minister while the president is the republican head of the country. For Saint Lucia the British Queen is the head of the state as the country is a member of the British Commonwealth. People participate to elect their representatives contesting in the elections in Saint Lucia.
