Water Transport

Water transport facilities in Rwanda are quite well-improved due to the presence of great lakes in the region. However, the water transport system in the country was greatly damaged during the civil war. Japan is contributing a great amount of money as an aid for reconstructing the water transport system of Rwanda.

Lake Kivu is the largest lake of Rwanda, which forms a border with the DRC. One can find boat services between the major ports of Kibuye, Cyangugu and Gisenyi. These services run on an occasional basis and do not follow a set timetable. These boat services often need to be chartered in case one wants to avail them. Some ferries also help in carrying people from one place to another, but even these do not operate on a daily basis. Only local fishermen operate in their dug-out canoes along the entire seashore and help people in moving about from one place to another. The Rwandan navy also operates few boats on Lake Kivu in order to guard the country against infiltration from the Congolese side.

Water transportation facilities on other lakes of Rwanda are very limited. On most of these lakes, ferries and local boats are used to carry people from end to another. Mostly local fishermen offer their services on most of the lakes in Rwanda. Some of the lake authorities even maintain their private hotels and resort bars. For instance, Jambo Beach on Lake Muhazi where tourists can enjoy a cruise trip in the personal speed boat of Jambo Beach.

Water transport facilities in Rwanda are expected to develop further in the coming years.
