The Rwanda Ministry of Education is often referred to as the MINEDUC because the ministry also has the added responsibility of guiding and encouraging the development of science and technology in the nascent country. MINEDUC stands for The Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Scientific Research and is currently its affairs are being presided over by Dr. Jeane D'Arc Mujawamaria. The small nation of Rwanda, lying to the south of the African continent, has very lately overcome its genocide problem and is now desperately struggling to find a place on the world map of development and education is an important part of this procedure. As such, the ministry of education has been burdened with the added responsibility of building a high literacy rate among Rwanda's present youth population.
Since, the infrastructure and the financial factor do not support much, Rwanda has of now been able to develop only its primary and secondary levels of education. It is desperately trying to build a strong higher education base and the ministry of education is working towards this goal. One of the foremost duties of the Rwanda ministry of education is to build such educational programs which would equip young people to combat all social and political evils, increase awareness of the outside world and modern technology and also an awareness about those diseases like, AIDS and malaria, which affect Rwanda the worst. The Rwanda ministry of education has been fairly successful in this regard, which is evident from the compared statistics of 1994 and 2005. Institutes imparting higher learning have gone up to 6 in 2000 from just 1 in 1994. Students enrolled in these higher education institutions have touched 7000, graduates from universities have gone up to 2000 in a span of just 5 years from 1995 to 2000.
The Rwanda ministry of education has been extra hard-working in building institutes that develop technology and one such institute encouraging the a technology based educational program is the Kigali Institute of Science, Technology and Management that has been set up by the Rwanda ministry of education.
