Rwanda Cement Industry

Rwanda is an agricultural country with around 90% of the population engaged in agriculture. However, industrial development measures in recent years has led to the growth of industries in Rwanda. Projects have been taken up by the government to boost industrial growth that will lead to improvement in the standard of living. Rwanda Cement Industry has in recent years witnessed an increase in its production.

Earlier Cimenterie du Rwanda was the only Rwanda Cement Industry. In the year 2004 the production of this industry was hampered due to shortage in power. This time also saw the rise in the construction sector while the cement production continued to remain low. As a result of this Rwanda was forced to import cement from other countries. In the year 2004 cement import increased by 7%. In fact construction material constituted around 3% of the total imports.

The development of Rwanda Cement Industry is necessary in order to reduce imports. Besides, the development of the construction industry is in a major way dependent on the Rwanda Cement Industry. In recent years there has been a rise in the price of Rwanda cement. This has been due to shortage of supply. Dealers have also been blamed for this price hike because it is believed that the shortage in supply has been done purposely by the dealers. Dealers are believed to have been stocking cement. Such a shortage in cement supply has increased imports from neighboring countries. In fact around 67.8 tons of cement was imported from Uganda.
