Kirehe

Kirehe district lies in the eastern region of Rwanda. Kirehe is mostly known for the honey producers of the district. One of the main sources of revenue of the people of Kirehe district is through the export of honey. Like the other districts of Rwanda, the Kirehe district also faces numerous health related problems. Due to inadequate facilities in the health sector the people of Kirehe suffers from deadly diseases like malaria, HIV, Aids and many more. In the Kirehe district, there is a huge shortage of medical staffs and doctors resulting in the deprivation of good medical facilities.

Poverty is another reason creating obstacle in the growth of the district. The District Incentive Funds is being implemented in the various districts of Rwanda which is a step forward in the development of the districts. From the year 2005, the Twubakane Program has taken a project of providing DIF funds to 12 districts of Rwanda, among which Kirehe is one such district. Days are not far when the Kirehe district will be just like another developed districts of the various countries. In the month of April 2006, the WFP organization along with its partners conducted an assessment in the five districts of Rwanda including Kirehe.

The Emergency Food Security Assessment (EFSA) conducted the survey in those districts that suffers most from scarcity of rainfall and inadequate crop yield. The assessment showed that 294,000 people of the Rwandan Districts suffer from inadequate food supply along with other problems. The survey recommended immediate food supply to the affected people of Kirehe along with the other districts of Rwanda. To initiate this process, the government of Rwanda in 2006, started distributing food in the 14 districts through a project, that was being launched in the Kirehe and Kayonza districts.
