The
city of Gitarama located in the Rwanda country includes a total land area of 2,187 square kilometers. In the period of colonial settlement and previous to the administrative reform of Rwanda,
Gitarama city was one of the former twelve provinces of Rwanda to have been colonized. Even though the
Gitarama city of Rwanda is a section of the southern province of Rwanda country, it is located in the central part of the country. This is actually the western part of Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. As per the census of 2002 of Rwanda, prior to the administrative reform of this country, the total population of
Gitarama city was approximately 851,451.

The city of Gitarama is also the home for its two major tourist attractions. They are:
- The Busaga forest and
- The Kamegeri rocks
