Gisenyi city is located in the Gisenyi district of Rwanda. Previous to the administrative reforms in Rwanda the city of Gisenyi, Rwanda was the capital city of Gisenyi district. Gisenyi city is located in the western part of Rwanda which is an area located at the lower part of a volcano called Nyragongo. Gisenyi city of Rwanda is situated at the border of the democratic Republic of Congo. At the time of Rwandan violence, the western provisional government of Rwanda was established in the Gisenyi town, Rwanda.
Gisenyi town is basically a lake resort situated at the centre of the district. Being located on the northern bank of Lake Kivu Gisenyi city of Rwanda is famous for its beautiful sand beaches and exciting water sports. The city of Gisenyi, Rwanda is also famous for the production of beer. It has a brewery established in the district.
