The city of Gikongoro is located in the Gikongoro district in Rwanda. Gikongoro district is situated in the South Province of Rwanda. Gikongoro city was one of the twelve provinces of Rwanda to be colonized during the colonial period. Previously Gikongoro city was located in the southwest part of Rwanda. Gikongoro city includes the total land area of approximately 2,146 square kilometers. According to the 2002 census the total population of the city of Gikongoro was estimated as 467,300.
The city of Gikongoro shares its border with the country called Burundi to the south. Within Rwanda Gikongoro city is surrounded by many other cities and provinces of Rwanda. The city of Gikongoro is bordered by Cyangugu to the west, Butare to the east, Kibuye to the north, and Gitarama to the northeast.
The city of Gikongoro can be a popular destination for the tourists of the world as it is located near to the Cyangugu city which is a home for Nyungwe Forest National Park. This park is basically a national park which includes a total land area of approximately 970 km˛, comprises of grassland, swamps, rainforest, bamboo and bogs. Apart from that, Kibuye district which is also located near to Gikongoro city is a market town, which is also a great attraction point for a numbers of tourists traveling to Gikongoro, Rwanda .
