In the 10th century Christianity from Byzantium came into existence. Russian literature was first introduced at that time. The early Russian literature under the influence of Byzantine adopted the Church Slavonic as its language. This literature was mostly religious in character. The Song of Igor’s Campaign is the first literary work that became quite famous during this period.
After the Russian Revolution, many literary writers left the country. However, the Bolsheviks who triumphed in the revolution helped to develop other forms of literary works such as poetry, short stories and novels. Some of the major writers of this period were Isaac Babel, Boris Pilnyak , V.V. Mayakovsky, Aleksey Tolstoy, A.N. Afinogenov and llya Ehrenburg.
Between the late 19th century and the early 20th century was the golden period of Russian literature. During this period melodrama, mysticism and introspection was greatly reflected in the literary works of Russia. The novels of S. Turgenev made him recognized world wide. The works of Leo Tolstoy and Feodor Dostoyevsky acclaimed a lot of fame and name making them one of the outstanding authors of the world. The popular poets who emerged during this period were Osip Mandelstam, Anna Akhmatova. Russian fictional literature was headed by Maxim Gorky before the revolution. The same passion and reality was portrayed in the dramas and stories that were written during this period by Ivan Bunin and Leonid Andreyev
