It is gathered from the history of Russian Geographical Society that it was established in Saint Petersburg, on 6th August, 1845. It was before the Russian Revolution of 1917, that the society was recognized as the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.
The scientific archive of Russian Geographical Society was also founded in 1845 and is considered to be one of the oldest in the world.
This society is composed of learned members who contribute to the field of geography, science and technology in Russia. Some of the founding members of Russian Geographical Society were Fyodor Litke, Vladimir Dahl, Fyodor Wrangel, Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve, Vladimir Odoyevsky and Karl Ernst von Baer. Some of the official presidents of Russian Geographical Society were Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich and Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich.
Functions of Russian Geographical Society
One of the important functions of the society is to fund, organize and assist various journeys and expeditions in any part of the world. In the past the society had aided the expeditions of eminent travelers such as Nikolai Miklukho-Maklai, Pyotr Kropotkin, Lev Berg, Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky, Pyotr Kozlov, Nikolai Przhevalsky and Vladimir Obruchev. The society also assists various conferences, seminars, congresses, symposia, film festivals, public hearings, exhibitions and festivals as well.
Russian Geographical Society is one of the oldest and renowned organizations of Russia.
