Russian Floating Nuclear Power Station

The construction of Russian floating nuclear power station is currently in progress. At present the country produces nearly up to 17% of its total electricity from 31 reactors and with this Russian floating nuclear power station, the generation would increase.

The launch of Russian floating nuclear power station is expected in the year 2010. According to the atomic energy ministry of Russia or Minatom, the plant's base unit is in Severodvinsk, located in Russia's Arctic north. This plant is to be named Akademik Lomonosov, whose main aim is to supply electricity to a shipbuilding firm called Sevmash, which constructs nuclear-powered submarines.

Minatom considers that the Russian floating nuclear power station could be largey employed in regions, which don't have much energy and also in power water purification installations. Minatom also claims that this Russian floating nuclear power station would operate for about 12 to 15 years. The level of radiation security of the plant is also very high.

The cost of Russian floating nuclear power station is about $200 million. The project of Russian floating nuclear power station is financed by Rosenergoatom, the nuclear energy producer of Russia and Sevmash.

Russia has plans of setting up about 7 floating nuclear plants by the end of 2015.

The completion of the Russian floating nuclear power station would result in the production of the first such plant in the world.
