Russian Federation People



The Russian Federation which has evolved on the ashes of the former Soviet Union has a unique blend of different cultures and people. According to the July 2002 census, the total number of Russian Federation people was about 144,978,573. At present the newly formed Russian Federation comprises of people who have descended from the ancient Rus race and mostly are of Slavic origin.

The most dominant part of the Russian Federation people is the Slavs who account for about 85% of the total population. Apart from these, there are three other ethnic major groups—Altaic, Caucasus and Uralic group. The Altaic group comprises of people who speak Turkic languages mainly and are spread along the North Caucasus, southern Ural Mountains and nearby mountainous regions. The Caucasus group mainly comprises of people residing along the northern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains. The Uralic group consists of Finnic people who live in upper Volga and the Ural region.

The native Russians account for about 81.5% of the total Russian Federation people followed by the Tatars who are the second largest group. The other eminent groups are Bashkirs, Mordovians, Chuvash, Ukrainians and Belorussians.

The most dominant religion of the Russian Federation people is roman orthodox Christianity followed by Islam and other minor religious communities.
