Republic of Novgorod has occupied a significant place in the history of Russia. Novgorod was situated in the north eastern part of Russia. This territory was inhabited by the Slavs. Novgorod was developed to a trading center and many townships also grew up.
The Slavs settled in Novgorod and soon it was made very prosperous under their efforts. It cane to be known as a prosperous city in whole of Europe from 9th century. This place became an important location in the North European territory as well as to the Kiev Rus.
Novgorod maintained trade relation with many countries, specially it made a sound business with the traders of Germany. Novgorod was known to export products like wax, pelts and fur. One of the popular occupation of the people of Novgorod was trade and making handiworks. Most of the people were well educated in Novgorod.
The general assembly in Novgorod was called Veche. In this Veche, only the male members of the society were allowed to attend. The executive was chosen in Novgorod. One of the local boyars, an executive was selected. This executive was responsible for handling all kinds of diplomatic decisions. Later Novgorod was transformed to a republic.
Republic of Novgorod unlike other cities of Old Rus and Kiev was not much affected by the political invasions of Mongol- Tatars. But later the power of the republic decreased.
