Mongol Invasion in Russian Federation



Mongol invasion in Russian Federation is an important event in Russia history. Mongols, a group of nomadic invaded Kievan Rus’, a state in Russia. The invasion started near about 1223.

During the invasions of Mongols in Kievan Rus’, it was already passing through political turmoil. An army formed of forces from Turkic Polovtsians and of Kievan Rus’, together tried defending the Mongol army. But it met with a failure.

During 1237 to 1238, Mongols again attacked Kievan Rus’ and the force got control over the city of Kiev. The Republic of Novgorod somehow escaped the Mongol raids. Only a part of the Mongol army went back to Saray. But it is from this place, Mongols maintained their dominance over Kievan Rus’.

Mongol invasion caused far reaching damages to Kiev. But on the other hand Moscow and Muscovy emerged under the Mongols. Russian army for once was successful in defeating the foreign power in 1380.

The Mongol invasion in Russian Federation had great influence on its society and culture. Many historians are of the opinion, that the Mongols introduced ‘oriental despotism’ in Russia and affected the national integrity of the country.
