The history of ancient Russia is very rich. Ancient Russia holds an important place in Russia history. A lot can be known about the initial settlers of the country from its history. In the ancient days immigrants from Scandinavia, known as the Varangians came to settle in the contemporary land of Russia.
The Varangians came to Russia by crossing the Baltic Sea. The Varangians around 862 A.D were guided to Novgorod city in Russia. They were led by an able leader, known as Rurik. Varangians established their settlement in Novgorod and Rurik continued to rule the city, until Oleg succeeded him. Under Oleg, power of the Varangians further strengthened.
Oleg exercised his power also on the city of Kiev. Later Kiev emerged as a developed city. During this time, Kievan Rus' emerged as an important territory as well as a prosperous center of trade in ancient Russia.
Vladimir I was a noted ruler of ancient Russia. Under his rule, the kingdom extended up to the Caucasus Mountain and Black Sea. After Vladimir I, the kingdom came under his successor, Yaroslav the Wise. During his rule, the kingdom prospered and its foreign relations improved.
After the death of Yaroslav in 1054 A.D, Kievan Rus' broke into internal strife. It got divided into small power structures. The political condition of the kingdom further deteriorated as it was invaded by Cumans, who were also known as the Kipchaks.
